Hot-Hot-Hot!!

Hot August Report!

Not only is the weather HOT but the fishing is as well, that is if you find the bait!! I started my look at the Intake without success.  After which I checked several other west side popular spots. I determined the thermocline to be holding just below 12′.  The Lowrance showed some fish, but not much bait.  Fish as I did, I was unable to trick any into biting. So I left the west side and graphed the central lake for thermocline and shad.  Once again finding fish but not enough shad to enhance getting bit. So onto the east side and found plenty of shad. I could then fish at a depth that correlated with the east side thermocline, which was deeper than the west side.

This opened up a deeper window of opportunity as the oxygen content in the water column moves deeper with the deeper thermocline.  Using the Lowrance, I followed the bait balls around until locating a school of fish!  What kind of fish was the question? At first I thought this was a post-spawn school of red ear and I had live worms on hand to find out! But thankfully,  I did not need them as the school turned out to be under slot size bass, with an occasional 16″ er.

Looking forward to some fried fish and hushpuppies tonight!!

Good Luck,
