Fayette County 9-9-17
not until the 4th round started! It took a while to put the pattern together, due to not having been on the lake for the past 3 weeks, not to mention hurricane Harvey! I had “pre-fished” on opening day, the 8th and limited my efforts to the jig n rip rap. The rip rap is a go to on the lake for most of us, and I didn’t want to get skunked after waiting to get back on. I caught um, but missed as many as I caught due to the temperamental bite.
So on the 9th, I went back and it was still the same, too slow for me so off I went. Well, of course I went back to where I was catching them pre Harvey. Bad Idea!
The lake has changed, and so has the fishing. The water level was up to the docks and was a deep rich green color. In addition, the water temps are around 86 degrees away from the discharge. Tempted to fish the flooded grass flats, I did so with a hit here and there. It was late in the day, so I noted the bites and will come back to that in the AM, as I am sure the shallow grass bite is off the charts. Only problem was, I wanted to light them up! So I sat and thought about it for a minute and put a plan together, basically to track down the bait fish via the lowrance. I relocated the boat to an area of the lake I had not fished in a while. Having said that, I idled around studying the graph until I found an isolated anomaly, at 12′.
That is where I started with the Dodge Rig and right off the bat started catching them, and better fish than I thought. That lasted a while, until I had to fine tune it into a new and better location which brought me to the championship rounds, as the day was over half done. From the start of round 4 till Joe Rogan stepped into the ring – it was a slug fest!! Alternating between the Dodge Rig and the Texas Craw football jig kept things interesting. Sorry, I seem to have misplaced the GPS coordinates , but suffice it to say that my boat was planted in 10′ of water!!
The video link is of the better fish caught! Also, the rod pictured is a Texas A&M themed rod I just finished making for a friend. It has the following blank:
MB863XF-MHX 7’2″ 10-17 lb. 3/16 – 11/16 oz. MH XF
It is magic on Fayette County for Carolina rigging. It comes with a serial number and lifetime replacement warranty on the blank from its manufacturer.
Enjoy and good luck,
