Lake Fayette Bluegill Report

The Bluegill bite is on!

Lake Fayette Bluegill
Lake Fayette Bluegill

Location:

Pack your ultralight rods and pick up some worms at Westside!!  It’s time to enjoy some of the best Bluegill fishing you can imagine on Lake Fayette!! The spawn is on and a good size Bluegill can push 16 ounces or more!!  You will find them nested up in the back of the creeks in the shallow water, especially around timber.  They also spawn in and around the flooded farm pond dams. If no luck shallow, don’t be afraid to look deeper.  Focus on the creek channel swings in 10 to 15 feet of water.  Many times the larger bluegill will stage up here.  You can also use your electronics to locate them as well.  Look for fish arches stacked up vertically as opposed to horizontal.  If you see something, drop a worm down.  It wont take long to find out if it is a bass, catfish or bluegill!

Bluegill Equipment:

You can use a cork or fish directly on the bottom. I prefer to use a 6′ medium light action rod pared with a 100 series spinning reel. A small hook set about 6 inches off the bottom coupled with a split shot works great. Many anglers use a slip cork, so it is easy to adjust the depth you are fishing. I prefer to use a drop shot rig so I do not have to hassle with a cork.  It is easy to toss around at different depths until you find them. Once you find them it should be game on for you!  In addition, most of the smaller baits sold at Academy will work as well. Downsizing your line to 4 to 6 pound test helps trick enough of them for a good fish fry at the end of the day.  If you have not been out lately it is hot, so be safe and drink plenty of water!!
